The Benefits of Strength in Improving Sport Performance
Optimal strength is the basis for sports performance. Strength or resistance training has been shown to improve strength, power, and speed in a number of athletic populations. In addition to improving these physical qualities, strength training also has significant benefits for athletes including the increasing of muscle mass, improved speed and explosiveness as well as decreasing the risk of injury. Because of this, strength training programs are now considered an important part of athlete preparation for sports. There are a number of areas of research that provide support for this. The quality of the program design, the degree of sport-specificity, and seasonal planning are critical components that contribute to the overall effect or impact that the program will have on overall performance.
